Last week I went 13-2 in the Pick'em Contest - my best showing in my three years of competing. Let's see if I can keep jumping up the leaderboard with this week's predictions....Again this week we will have the combined predictions of Gamecocks235 (Damian Thorpe of Aiken) and The Top Fan....Gamecocks235 Predictions will come first, with my predictions to follow....
Mississippi State at Arkansas - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Dan Mullen has done a solid job in Starkville in his first season there. However, this week will not be so kind to him. Arkansas has played very good football in the second half of the season, and at home, I think they are just a bit too much for the Bulldogs. Arkansas, 31-22.
#11 Oregon at Arizona - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Oregon has been an up and down team in 2009. They beat USC, but lost to Boise and Stanford. Both teams can still win the Pac 10, but must win out. ESPN's Gameday program will be in Tuscon for this game, and the Wildcats will be ready. This will be a war, and in the end is a toss up. I'll take the home team in the upset. Arizona, 30-28.
California at #14 Stanford - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way...........The Top Fan says: I was very tempted to pick this as my upset of the week, but I held off. Maybe I am just not used to the name of Stanford being ranked up in the top-15. But then I think about how Cal has let me down, and how Jim Harbaugh has this Cardinal team playing well, and I will stick with the home team. Stanford, 28-23.
Kentucky at Georgia - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Georgia will win this one. LIke I mentioned last week against Auburn, UGA's Mark Richt is in the process of gettiing his back off from up against the wall. Winning last week helped some, and beating UK will help some more this week. The Dawgs have a tough date at GT next week, so this game is dangerous. Still, I think they get the win. Georgia, 30-20.
UNC at Boston College - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Man oh man oh man, whatever do I pick here?! North Carolina has been very inconsistent this year, while BC has played a bit over their heads. BC was supposed to be "down", yet here they are again and with some luck can make it to the ACCCG. And UNC, they were looking for big things, but didn't reach the top-25 until week 11. UNC has more talent so to say, but BC is always a tough football team. I'm going to take BC with the win here. BC, 28-24.
#13 Penn State at Michigan State - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: I have been a Penn State fan all year, and I am not sure why really. Maybe I just like their traditional uniforms or want Joe Paterno to win late in his final days. Whatever the reason, I will pick them once again this weekend on the road at Michigan State. This will be a battle, but hopefully the Lions will win this one for me. Penn State, 21-13.
#9 Ohio State at Michigan - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: I have stewed and stirred over this game for the last half an hour like it is nobody's business! Man, what a tough call this one is. On one hand, Ohio State is just plain a better team. However, on the other hand, they really haven't looked like world beaters at any point during the season. Michigan has under-achieved (in my opinion), but is still capable of taking this game. Ah, the hell with it, I'm going to go out on a limb and take Michigan in a dramatic season-saving type win! Michigan, 30-28.
#10 LSU at Mississippi - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: I may regret it, but I am making this my week of picking upsets. Along with Arizona and Michigan, I will take Ole Miss here to defeat LSU. I can either make a big jump in the Fans25 standings, or eliminate myself this week. LSU has struggled to score points, and I think the Mississippi seniors will leave Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with a win in their final home game. Mississippi, 27-23.
Kansas State at Nebraska - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: With so much at stake, Nebraska has to win this game at home. Those folks live and die for their football out there, and the taste of success is not far away. Yes, they would be heavy underdogs should they win the division and meet Texas. But for Nebraska as a program, making the Big Twelve title game has to be a very positive step back towards glory. Lincoln will be going nuts, and Nebraskla gets the win. Nebraska, 27-17.
Virginia at #18 Clemson - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Everyone knows what is at stake here: Clemson wins and they go to Tampa to play for the ACC championship. This game scares me. No, I don't think UVA is in the same stratosphere as Clemson. But the Tigers have a tendency to stiffen up in big games, and that cannot happen. Virginia has some good athelets on their team, and as any college football fan knows, anything can happen. But I think Clemson rallies behind a raucous home crowd, and runs UVA out of Death Valley. CU has been this close to winning the Atlantic before - this time they get it done. Clemson, 37-13.
NC State at #16 Virginia Tech - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way...........The Top Fan says: This game should be over by the second quarter. The Hokies are a very good football team that has come across some tough luck in 2009. NC State is just not good at all. I am still trying to figure out how the Pack beat Pitt back in September. Anyway, Hokies win big. VT, 40-10.
Duke at #21 Miami - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Duke has had a nice run in David Cutcliffe's 2nd year in Durham. But the fun is probably over. Georgia Tech waxed them 49-10 a week ago, and this week could be more of the same. I want to go for Duke, but I think Miami wins this one BIG. Miami, 41-7.
Vanderbilt at Tennessee - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Tennessee has had a weird season, but not totally bad. Under a first year coach, they have had their ups and downs. This weekend, I think, will be an up for UT. The Vols have yet to win a break-through game, but they have beaten all of the teams that they are supposed to, and I think that is how this weekend will go, as well. Tennessee, 35-24.
Oklahoma at Texas Tech - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: Man, another tough game to call! Both of these teams are lingering at the edge of the top-25 and need a win to get in position for a better bowl. OU has lost close four times. TTU meanwhile, has lost to Texas and Houston - not too bad - but then got whalloped by Texas A&M. Still, with the big-play threat that TTU has, I think they will score just enough to get past Oklahoma. Texas Tech, 30-20.
UConn at Notre Dame - Gamecocks235 predictions on the way............The Top Fan says: It is going to be too little, too late for Charlie Weis. Basically, he is gone. Notre Dame has the money to do it, and now after a dismal season, they have a reason to do it. Notre Dame will probably come out and win this game, but this will be the last ever game in which he roams the ND sideline. Notre Dame, 27-20.
