World Cup and Omaha Update

The Road to Omaha is really getting some traffic now as TCU, South Carolina, Florida State and Florida have all put it in drive and hit the freeway towards the heartland! Yes, college basbeall's postseason is great to keep up with, as I love the structure of its playoff. It isn't true single-elimination playoff, but it makes you win on the field, and that is all that really matters. It is fact, not opinion, on who our national champions is.
For the Horned Frogs, this is their first ever trip to Rosenblatt Stadium, and they earned it, winning at Texas - the nation's top team through most of the year. I really didn't think they had much of a chance of winning on the road at Texas, but a late 2-run bomb gave the Frogs a late 3-0 lead in game 3 that they would not surrender. It's great to see a team make their first trip...
South Carolina reaches the College World Series for the first time since 2004, as they took care of Coastal Carolina - on the road - to earn their 9th trip to Omaha via two heart-stopping wins. In game one, the Chanticleers could not keep up with the fastball of USC's relief pitching. That pitching continuously bailed the Cocks out of tight situations with strikeouts. In the second game, Coastal was one out from the win when a walk, a double and a bomb of a home run sent USC fans into a frenzy at BB&T Field in Myrtle Beach...
Florida State held off Vanderbilt to get the win in the deciding game three from Tallahassee. The 'Noles have reached Omaha 20 times now, but have yet to win the title. This team finished second in its division, but is now headed to college baseball's elite eight...
Florida, with a quick defeat of in-state rival Miami, earned its sixth trip to the CWS...
Arizona State and UCLA give the Pac-10 two representatives in Omaha. The Sun Devils took down Arkansas while UCLA knocked out the 2004 champion, Cal State Fullerton...
Today their will be two more deciding games as Clemson faces Alabama at 1:00 (est) and Virginia and Oklahoma tangle at 7 pm...
In the World Cup, two of the favorites in the event - Germany and Argentina - both won their first round games and lead their respective groups. England is another favorite (3rd in world rankings), but thanks to goalie Robert Green letting a goal through for a tie with the US, the Brits are going to have to fight to get through to the knockout rounds. The other favorites in the World Cup - Brazil, Spain and Italy - all begin play in the next couple of days...
The Cup is ticking me off. I have been waiting four years for this event, and I have to listen to the games on mute. I honestly cannot let the sound of those horns settle in. It gives me a headache. I love the chants and singing and stomping and flag waving. I do not like loud horns that sound like a swarm of ten million killer bees...
The Americans are in decent shape, but need to win their next two games. The tie was more of a win for us than it was for England, but if we lose to Algeria or Slovenia, chances are we will not get through. Slovenia already has a win (Algeria), and thus as of right now are the group leaders. As long as we do not lose, I think we will be ok. But if we slip up, a loss and a tie together will make it very, very borderline as England will probably have two wins...
And finally, in the NBA Finals, the Celtics have taken the lead with them back to LA. I have a friend who is 110 percent convinced that the NBA (especially the Finals) are officiated through a Vegas tv set by bookies. I'm starting to beleive him. One night, one team looks great. The next night the other team looks great. One night one team is making bonehead plays, and on the next night, the other team is doing the same. One thing that stays consistent though is the refs SUCK.
I have seen guys "fouled" without their jerseys ever actually making thread to thread contact. What?! And once guys get into foul trouble, the whole tempo of things changes, along with gameplans. I'm not sure if the Finals are fixed, but it is one of those "things that makes you go 'hmmmm'."
