Week Nine Predictions

This is the week of the underdog in my picks. Yes, in 6 of my 10 picks, I am choosing the 'dog to prevail with the victory. The biggest spread I am going to challenge is in Utah, where the Utes are a 10-point 'dog to Washington. I'm taking Utah to knock the Huskies out of the top 10 and from the ranks of the unbeaten teams. Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas, Notre Dame and Duke are the other teams that I think pull the upset....Michigan should roll over MSU, Wisconsin will hand Nebraska their first L, and Tennessee should take down South Carolina. The toss-up of the weekend - in my book - is Clemson at FSU. The Tigers rarely have success in Tallahassee and this year will be no cakewalk, either. Being a 4-point favorite, Clemson can nearly lock up a Playoff bid with a W. I am taking them in a nail-biter...

#2 Michigan (7-0) at Michigan State (2-5) - 12:00 - ESPN - We all know what happened a year ago, and that is just one more reason I am picking Michigan. Besides the Wolverines having a better team, they will be more than focused on every single play all the way through the final bell...Michigan, 24-14

Duke (3-4) at GT (4-3) - 12:00 - ACC Network - I'm not real sure how this ended up as the 10th game of the Pick'em slate this week - maybe I was still drunk from the night before - but here it is. The mighty Dookies against the GT bees - a battle of nerds if you will. I honestly have no clue what to do here with this pick, and quite frankly I really don't care, either. I'm going to go with Duke. I like Coach Cutcliffe....Duke, 28-21

Georgia (4-3) vs #14 Florida (5-1) - Jacksonville, FL - 3:30 - CBS - This is a tough pick. UGA has been up and down so far while the Gators are just a bad quarter of ball from being unbeaten. The Gator D is fierce at just 12 ppg (2nd best nationwide), but you can throw stats and all that out of the window in this one. Really, there is no predicting this game - just gotta get lucky..............Georgia, 20-17

#8 Baylor (6-0) at Texas (3-4) - 3:30 - ABC - Apparently everyone hates Baylor this year. I'm not real sure why as I try not to read the drama of all of the off-the-field crap that happens, but regardless, I can ride that train. **** Baylor. There I said it. And Texas? **** them, too. Why not. In this one, since neither of these teams are liked, who cares who wins. If UT loses, all we will hear about is who is the next coach going to be. If Baylor wins, they cheated...or something. I don't know.......Texas, 28-24

Miami (4-3) at Notre Dame (2-5) - 3:30 - NBC - I am in a ND fan group on facebook (not sure why) and it has been hysterical to watch fans' posts from preseason to now as the team went from being the '85 Bears to a middle school team. The fans reactions range from ever loyal to "fire everybody!"...Miami, meanwhile, has actually kind of impressed me so far. They have a long ways to go, but they are showing signs of life under Mark Richt. Still, I think they are lacking fire power, and ND holds them to a low scoring game and defends home turf.....Notre Dame, 23-19

#4 Washington (7-0) at #17 Utah (7-1) - 3:30 - FOX Sports 1 - Going to go Utes here. Not only we do we have a few good Utah fans on the boards here, but I like this team and I like the way they play at home. Washington is looking good and they will be a factor for many years under Chris Petersen, but I think Utah gets it done and starts thinking PAC-12 crown and a possible Playoff berth.....Utah, 31-27

#7 Nebraska (7-0) at #11 Wisconsin (5-2) - 7:00 - ESPN - This site has more Nebraska fans than any other school, so I try to adopt them as my homeboys. And, to be for real, they are getting better and are looking pretty good. But I want to see them win a game like this: against a tough team in a tough place when it really matters. I'm not saying Nebraska isn't for real, I just want to see more. Going to go Badgers here, maybe NU will prove me wrong........Wisconsin, 20-13

#18 Tennessee (5-2) at South Carolina (3-4) - 7:15 - ESPN2 - Against Alabama, Tennessee was exposed as not quite ready to be a Top 10 team. Still, I think they are way capable of going into WBS and beating a USC team that is struggling on offense to say the least (127th nationally in points for at 16 ppg). Will Muschamp has a good defense, and if his squad can keep it close until late you never know. But I think UT is too strong at this point and gets the road W....Tennessee, 30-17

#15 Auburn (5-2) at Ole Miss (3-4) - 7:15 - SEC Network - Auburn has turned things around in recent weeks, with their fans quietly putting down their "Fire Gus!" signs. While they are on the rise though, they face a tricky game here as they face an Ole Miss team that can score quick, but seems to lack discipline - so you never know what you're going to get. I think the Rebels are better than their 3-4 record, and will be on a mission to prove that Saturday at home....Ole Miss, 41-37

#3 Clemson (7-0) at #12 FSU (5-2) - 8:00 - ABC - I have seen a lot of college football in my day, and have seen lots of games set up such as this one - which isn't good for Clemson. The Tigers are a visiting Top 5 team that has won 20-something straight regular season games....it's a night game....it's a rowdy crowd...they face a team with 5-star players across the two-deep roster...they face a team with little to lose....they are playing in a venue that they have won just twice in since 1989...So with all of that going on, it seems level headed for me to swallow my pride and pick FSU - but I can't. And the reason I can't is QB Deshaun Watson. I think he will find a way to get CU a win and keep Playoff hopes alive....Clemson, 31-24
